Race: High Elf
Class: Witch 12
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Faith: The Seldarine
Faraine’s family had long been one of the most respected lineages of warriors in Seldarra. For generations, the Nightstar name was to be found among the greatest generals and frontline fighters of the nation, defending the last hold-out of elven freedom in Eryx with great strength and unbroken pride. It is somewhat telling, however, that over the centuries the once-vast noble family shrunk ever further.
The final battles against the Samaran Empire were doubly vicious. The Empire, at the time having just given up on Faytan completely, had decided to instead focus all their forces on finishing the unification of Eryx, and Seldarra was the first nation to feel the hammer blow of the Samarans. Faraine was only a child at the time, but over the span of several years she was left in foster-care with a family of friends, while her entire clan, one by one, were sent off to the front, not to return. Her last living kin, her mother, died in the very final battle of the campaign against the Samarans.
The final Nightstar grew up a bitter and resentful woman, prone to snapping at others for the slightest provocation, and with a white-hot anger directed at all non-elves. This she keeps a secret: in public, she proclaims herself a conservative, who merely wants Seldarra to reclaim it’s ancestral culture. When speaking to moderates, she lies and explains that she’s even willing to accept having a few half-elven nobles in the realm.
Faraine is believed to be a powerful wizard, an image she cultivates and which makes sense: she was raised by a family famous for their arcane prowess. In truth, her magic is something altogether darker. When arcane studies proved too slow and unfocused for the ambitious, angry young woman, she forged a pact with a mysterious benefactor, who to this day grants her magic. She is not entirely sure who this benefactor is or what their intentions are, but presenting herself as one of the most powerful wizards in Seldarra has certainly strengthened her position remarkably, allowing her to become the leader of the faction most strongly opposed to the King.
Faraine has found an ancient Aosken Ruin in one of the islands between Seldarra and Valenpoint, and firmly believes that all such ruins must be of elven construction. Too busy with politics to pursue this interest in person, she is known to send adventurers and retainers to explore and study these ruins, the secrets of which she hopes to eventually unlock, as a possible direction for human-free expansion for the realm, or maybe even a source of new, fey allies.
