Why does this House Rule exist?
Valen is meant to be a friendly game, players are expected to be able to experiment, try dangerous things and generally put their necks out a bit, and they shouldn't be punished harshly for this. However, at the same time, it can be intensely frustrating to see characters who are already very powerful, and played by very experienced players, getting this kind of preferential treatment, and generally being able to avoid consequences for actions which should otherwise have been disastrous. Additionally, players whose characters have achieved great degrees of power and influence over the game should act responsibly with this power, to avoid disrupting play for newer players.
Advanced Leveling
Characters cannot level past level 10 without the approval of an admin or moderator, and upon taking that additional level, they agree to higher degrees of responsibility and liability.
It is the typical attitude of all admins and moderators to try and help characters deal with the consequences of IC events. While characters may still be killed, captured or otherwise harmed at all levels, storytellers are expected to work to the limits of narrative and thematic coherence to make sure characters remain playable. What this means is that a character defeated in combat may recover from the injuries (even without healing), characters imprisoned by NPCs may find a lucky way to escape captivity, etc.
Players who choose to advance a character to level 11 or higher willingly forfeit this character shield. For these powerful characters, RP is played ‘to the hilt’, with no preferential treatment, no hand-outs and no hand-holding. These characters can become very powerful, but they can just as easily be ruined by the machinations of other player characters or NPCs.
Additionally, players who choose to level a character to 11 and beyond agree to be especially observant of the OOC Rules of play in Valen. They are by no means moderators (and are given no such power), but have nonetheless chosen to become an important part of this game, and should act with responsibility towards other players.
These rules also apply to characters who become Sovereigns, or Leaders of Major Factions, regardless of the level of their character. These characters may additionally be required to participate with some frequency in the maintenance and leadership of their state or faction.
