The Samaran Empire is the strongest nation in living memory, having once ruled almost the entirety of Faytan and Eryx, as well as many holdings beyond. For the past centuries, the empire has been facing constant misfortune, and its borders continue to shrink with every year.
Though troubles abounded even before that, an enormous planar fissure announced the beginning of the end for the Samaran’s Empire grip on the known world. As numberless planar creatures slipped through the fissure and onto the empire’s most ancient lands in southern Faytan, the numbers and strength of their legions and sky-fleets simply was not enough. After years of campaigns, many defeats and even more pyrrhic victories, the empire abandoned all of Faytan, leaving behind its erstwhile capital of Sammarach. The nation has been shrinking even further with every passing year.
The Fall of Samarach
For those in the Valenpoint Peninsula, the Empire is a distant but still-present force. One of their legions was sent to help defend Spilan during the recent wars against the undead, but they have since departed and other than that incursion, none of their fleets or soldiers have been seen in many years - most importantly, none of their governors or tax-collectors have been sent. Though trade still occurs with the Samaran Empire, especially in Spilan, for the rest of the Peninsula they are largely seen as a memory, and one that few like to evoke.
The empire’s legendary history begins two millennia ago, with the founding of a mighty city in the southern shore of Faytan. Many stories are told of those first years, commemorating the first leaders, first heroes and ancient tragedies that propelled what was once a lone city-state into the largest empire in the known world.
