The Samaran Empire was had been contracting for decades, so it was no great shock when every one of their armies and navies stationed in the Valenpoint Peninsula were called away to keep the order elsewhere. When a year went by without any of those forces returning, it became clear that although the empire was not granting the peninsula its independence, it was certainly in no position to prevent it.
Newly-freed, the two great cities of the peninsula formed their own city-states, while various collections of towns, hamlets and farmlands in between did their best to set up their own elder’s councils and local rule. Now, a hundred years later, the descendants of those elders and nobles still rule over most of the region, a loose patchwork of tiny nations.
The peace was shaken by the unexpected surge of the undead Realm Reborn, a force that boiled up from the underground and through the mountain passes, initially overwhelming all resistance. The resultant war lasted five years, drawing the entire peninsula together as well as allies near and far. In the end, by the skin of their teeth, the peninsula’s defenders won out.
A new, loose confederation was born in the fire of this war, but with the undead horde defeated, the cracks in the union are quickly starting to show. Valen, newly dubbed the City of Hope, stands foremost among the cities of the peninsula, but even it is threatened in this new, chaotic age.
