Valen received nearly two hundred thousand refugees over the course of the war with the undead, and no amount of state diligence was capable of duly housing that many people, over so short a period of time. Consequently, several large neighborhoods composed nearly entirely of shantytowns grew outwards from the city, sprawling over what had been the outskirts of the city.
The largest such shanty-town is called The Tatters, and several disappearances had occurred in the ramshackle neighborhood over the past week. Spurred by the account of local, Alessia brought a couple of her arms-men and allies Suzi Greenfoot and Rowan the Initiate to investigate a possible undead threat.
They discovered what had once been an overland canal, overgrown and blocked by the growth of the shanty-town upon it. What had once been an open-air waterway had turned into a poorly-covered tunnel that ran under the sprawling neighborhood, with a dinghy wooden roof, imperial sides and a bottom covered in muck and filth.
Within a short time of exploring the canal, the party ran into the first ghoul, and soon after an ambush with a total four of them. After a brief melee, the group managed to dispatch the creatures, and exploration revealed that one of the shacks built by the canal had been broken-into by the creatures, who slew the couple who lived within.
Turning the creatures in for a bounty, it was determined that the ghouls were a rare form of ghast-lacedon, which combined a ghast's strength with a lacedon's ability to thrive in water. The canal lead all the way to the sea-side, creating a good possibility that the original creature had swam up from the sea and onto the canal. The party were paid a bounty for the dead creatures, and also allowed to keep what was found on the corpse of the older ghouls, which seemed to be very old elven corpses.
